LE ARTI ORAFE JEWELLERY SCHOOL, FIRENZE
Studying, learning, experimenting without limits or boundaries
Established in 1985 by Giò Carbone, LAO – LE ARTI ORAFE JEWELLERY SCHOOL was the first Italian school devoted to contemporary jewellery, and since the very beginning has encouraged and promoted a learning process emphasizing technical training, contemporary design, artistic research. Our completely innovatory teaching methods has left the old stereotypes behind and invented, tested and refined a creative, personalized way of learning, without losing sight of the acquisition of the techniques and concepts. Nowadays the school is one of the most important in Europe, is an Accredited Training Agency for courses approved and financed by the ESF (European Social Fund), and an Authorized entity for Erasmus projects.
Living and studying in Florence, the most famous art city in the world
LAO has always had its headquarters in the historic heart of Florence, in the S.Spirito/San Frediano district, which still retains its own character and offers visitors and residents an intense human experience: the home of artists and craftspeople who have made it famous throughout the world, the Toscana region is still rich in exceptional craftsmanship, and preserves a human dimension that attracts thousands of visitors from around the world. The school inherits the Renaissance spirit of the region, but the great lesson of the past is re-launched, and the teaching staff take into account the changing of costumes, the modifications in historical and social conditions, the requirements of its students, the evolution of the concept of jewellery, with the competences in new technologies, knowledge of processes and materials and the innovation in design and function.
The concept of jewellery has evolved in surprising ways over the past 50 years, with the advent of the earliest artists who conducted their research on contemporary jewellery. The methods, the processes, the functions of jewellery have been profoundly changed, also thanks to the work of our school, which now finds imitators around the world.
The school has always stood out because of its activities in promoting jewellery culture in the widest and most complete sense of the expression, and since many years organizes exhibitions, conferences, meetings related with contemporary research jewellery. Since 2005 the school organizes PREZIOSA contemporary International exhibition and and the side contest/exhibition PREZIOSA YOUNG (www.preziosa.org).
