1. What inspired you to transition from traditional art forms like canvas painting to contemporary jewelery ?
It is driven by a deep love for the industry and a desire to see it progress alongside the times. I’ve always felt a sense of responsibility, a sort of protective instinct, to ensure that the industry doesn’t stagnate in tradition and mere adornment. Instead, I want to see it evolve to bring more meaning and utility, opening up new avenues for creativity and innovation.
2. Could you share more about the journey of conceptualising and creating your award-winning collection “SOLACE”?
The journey was driven by extensive research into the connection between jewellery and wellness, leading to the selection of materials like metal and silicone for their healthcare associations. Through interviews with medical experts and exploration of acupuncture points, I integrated therapeutic functionality into each piece, complemented by high-tech elements like pulse sensors. The design process aimed to push the boundaries of traditional jewellery, resulting in a collection that not only adorned but also provided tangible benefits to the wearer, culminating in recognition within the industry.
3. Your collection integrates Chinese therapeutic practices like acupuncture into wearable art. How did you first come up with this innovative concept?
The concept was born out of my aspiration to promote traditional Chinese culture while exploring the potential of jewellery in enhancing wellness. Inspired by acupuncture’s healing traditions, I integrated its principles into wearable art, aiming to celebrate both aesthetic beauty and the rich heritage of Chinese therapeutic practices.
4. What role does cultural heritage play in shaping your artistic vision and jewellery making process?
Cultural heritage plays a significant role in shaping my artistic vision and jewellery making process by providing rich sources of inspiration, traditional techniques, and historical symbolism. I draw from cultural traditions, aesthetics, and craftsmanship to infuse depth and meaning into my designs. Additionally, cultural heritage informs my understanding of materials and their significance, guiding my choices in creating pieces that resonate with diverse audiences.
5. Could you elaborate on the symbolism behind incorporating Chinese healing symbols into your jewellery pieces?
Incorporating Chinese healing symbols into my jewellery pieces symbolises a fusion of traditional Eastern healing practices with contemporary design. It bridges ancient wisdom with modern lifestyles, emphasising the potential of jewellery for both adornment and promoting well-being. It also reflects inclusivity and diversity, and embraces classic cultural elements while driving forward contemporary innovation, I aim to honour the past while advancing the present in the realm of jewellery
6. What challenges did you encounter during the development of the “SOLACE” collection, and how did you overcome them?
During the creation of the “SOLACE” collection, I faced challenges in material selection, integrating acupuncture points, incorporating high-tech sensors, and balancing functionality with aesthetics. To address these challenges, I took the initiative to learn new knowledge and fully understand the relevant concepts before applying them. I also sought advice and conducted research with professionals from various fields, absorbing their expertise and insights.
7. Your jewellery priorities wearer-piece interaction and holistic well-being. How do you envision your jewellery impacting the lives of those who wear it?
My jewellery promotes wearer-piece interaction and holistic well-being. By incorporating acupuncture points and high-tech sensors, it provides tangible health benefits and enhances self–awareness. It serves as a catalyst for positive change, empowering individuals to prioritise health and mindfulness.
8. Can you walk us through your creative process, from initial idea generation to the final product?
My creative process begins with in-depth research and conceptualisation, exploring themes and concepts like the relationship between jewellery and healthcare. I then focus on integrating specific elements, such as acupuncture points and medical-grade materials, into my designs. Through iterative design development and meticulous craftsmanship, I refine my ideas, ensuring that each piece not only looks beautiful but also serves a purpose in promoting wellness. Overall, my process involves research, conceptualisation, design development, and craftsmanship, all aimed at creating jewellery that embodies my values as a designer.
9. Where do you see yourself from now in three years? What is your wildest dream?
In three years, I envision myself as an established designer known for innovative and impactful jewellery creations that bridge the gap between healthcare and fashion. My wildest dream is to revolutionise the jewellery industry by introducing cutting-edge designs that not only adorn the body but also contribute to physical and mental well-being on a global scale.
