Xuan Xu holds a bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering from China University of Geosciences in Wuhan. Within this rational framework defined by data, composition, stress, and structure, she developed a deep understanding of material properties. Over time, she became increasingly drawn to a more intuitive and emotional mode of expression beyond the material world. This desire led her to cross disciplinary boundaries and pursue an MA in Jewellery and Metal at the Royal College of Art, beginning a new journey that connects material science, structure, and bodily perception.
In her practice, materials are not passive mediums but active extensions of thought. She deconstructs conventional structural systems and redefines the meaning of adornment. With the precision of an engineer and the intuition of an artist, she reshapes the language of contemporary jewellery through an interdisciplinary approach.
Her background gives her a distinct perspective, blending logic with emotion and science with aesthetics. Refusing to be confined by traditional materials or forms, she explores innovative substances, technologies, and kinetic structures to expand what jewellery can express. Her work begins with a sensitive observation of materiality, testing physical limits and structural thresholds while ultimately returning to the body as the site of interaction.
Xuan’s creations are highly experimental, focusing not only on the physical qualities of materials but also on how they behave within the sensory field of the body. She translates complex mechanical thinking into intimate bodily experiences, where cool structures conceal subtle warmth. Guided by structural thinking and driven by material exploration, she continues to challenge and redefine the boundaries of contemporary jewellery.

Instruments of Light

Description of the collection:

Instruments of Light is an exploration of intangible materials. Influenced by the gloom of winter and seasonal depression, I began to investigate the potential effects of light on the body and emotions. Starting from the materiality of light, I use jewellery as a medium to construct a sensory space in which the wearer interacts with light. Light is no longer merely a source of illumination, but becomes a material that resonates with both the body and surrounding space.
Through movable structures and interactive wearing experiences, I aim to break away from the conventional notion of jewellery as static objects, transforming them into devices that activate sensory perception and provoke psychological response. I explore how light flows and refracts between the body and space, and how it evokes emotional and visual reactions upon contact—prompting a renewed understanding of perception itself. The interaction between light and the wearer becomes an immediate experience of presence, awareness, and resonance.
Each piece features a replaceable battery to ensure long-term functionality, while the use of minimal geometric forms reduces visual interference and allows the wearer to focus on the sensory experience. The light source is magnetically triggered, an unobtrusive mechanism that adds a layer of ritual and quiet engagement. In these interactions, the wearer may experience a moment of calm, softness, and genuine emotional relief.
By deconstructing and reimagining materiality, I aim to provoke a multidimensional reflection on the existence of objects, spatial perception, and emotional states. The transient and immaterial nature of light challenges the permanence of materiality, prompting a fundamental question: Is the value of jewellery found in the preciousness of its materials, or in the emotional and sensory experiences it awakens?
