Stephanie Elderfield is a contemporary jewellery artist based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewellery + Metals from the Alberta College of Art +Design in 2014. Working under the name of Metal Myth Studios, Stephanie makes limited production and one of kind jewellery pieces from rich coloured metals, silver and gemstones.
Stephanie’s work is inspired by beautiful plants found while exploring gardens and parks in and around her city. She is especially interested in the change of seasons in regards to her organic works. The passage of time alters the appearance of plants quite dramatically at times, and this theme is frequently found within her works.
What are the main concepts translated through your work?
My work explores the vast array of shapes and colours found in plant life throughout the seasons. I strive for realism trapped in time, a bloom that will never fade, a decaying leaf frozen in a moment. My pieces are snapshots of a brief moment or a memory, transformed into a precious object to be kept close to the heart.
What material would you like to get to work with but haven’t had the chance yet?
I am very interested in exploring vapour deposited metals in my work. It is a fascinating process that allows for brilliant rainbows to be achieved, and I feel like it would be a good addition to my coloured metal techniques.
How would you describe the person wearing your jewellery?
The person wearing my jewellery is understated and professional, but has an unexpected flare to them. They know what they like, and are not afraid to be themselves. They are creative people, and would often be described as a nature lover.
What is the best advice you have ever received?
The best advice I have received is from my dad. He has always told me that if I want something, I am going to have to work hard to achieve it. The effort you put into doing something will show at the end, and you should always work hard enough that you will be proud of your final results.
If you were to be a piece of jewellery, what would you be?
I would be a brooch! A brooch is a bit unusual and adds a fun element to an outfit. Brooches can be elegant, but also have the potential to be a little on the wild side.
