Intellectual Property rights, Artificial Intelligence and the ESG goals on the United Nations 2030 Agenda. CIBJO, the Confédération International de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie des Diamants, Perles et Pierres, brought three key themes to Vicenzaoro September 2023 for the present and future of the gold and jewellery industry on the third day of Italian Exhibition Group’s international exhibition, ongoing at Vicenza Expo Centre until Tuesday 12th . The seminars, with high-level international panels, opened with an introductory greeting from Marco Carniello, IEG’s Global Exhibition Director Jewellery & Fashion, and CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri, in commemoration of President Lorenzo Cagnoni.
Why should a young designer or a small brand invest part of their budget to protect their intellectual property from the different legislation, such as that in America and in Europe, and from country to country? «Because it is the medium-term ROI of this industry,» said Chiara Luzzato from Studio Torta in Milan at the talk entitled “Defending what is yours: Intellectual Property in the jewellery industry”, moderated by Lisa Koenigsberg , president of Initiatives in Art and Culture, in a debate between the two sides of the Atlantic on the different regulations and attitudes to copyright, trademarks, patents and design patents, with Sara Yood, deputy general counsel of the Jewelers Vigilance Council, and Erika Andreotti, also from Studio Torta, expert in Italian jewellery trademarks and intellectual property rights.
Intellectual property, returned among the topics of the impact of artificial intelligence in the second talk with Sara Yood, in which Paola De Luca , founder and creative director of Trendvision Jewellery + Forecasting, highlighted how both the fear of employment repercussions and the threat to intellectual property are unjustified since the act of creating has always stemmed from inspired research and technology. In this case, A.I. simply makes it possible to intercept and process the flow of stimuli that contribute to determining (and anticipating) the zeitgeist more effectively. In this perspective, it becomes a highly important tool for guiding creatives in the manufacturing of products able to respond to contemporary taste, and thus of achieving good commercial performance. David Block , CEO of Sarine Technologies, confirmed how AI can also become an essential and useful tool in the diamond industry, both in terms of grading, with positive effects on turnaround times, and accuracy of analysis, as well as commercially, by improving the possibility of gemstone profiling and thus facilitating matching with buyers based on gemstone characteristics and buyers’ needs with a mechanism similar to the one used by Netflix in the presentation of its film catalogue.
From the online guide that UN Women has prepared to assess gender equality in companies, and which will be presented next week in New York, to CIBJO’s “Responsible Sourcing Blue Book”: the gold and jewellery industry’s commitment to the UN’s Agenda 2030 goals is deep-rooted and looks ahead with ambition, as Iris Van der Veken, Secretary General of Watch & Jewellery Initiative 2030, reminded us, as she spoke with Gaetano Cavalieri , CIBJO President, in the third talk of the day, which summed up the state of the art of the ESG agenda in view of the CIBJO World Conference in Jaipur next October. Biodiversity, inclusion, gender equality: «We know where the gaps are, we have to address them and make progress because we work in the industry of beauty and emotion,» Van Der Veken concluded.
EMPATHY, THE INDEPENDENT JEWELLERS’ COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE: THE BARTORELLI 1882 CASE
Nurturing relationships with end customers, the last mile of the value chain in the jewellery industry. Emotional intelligence, non-selective listening and empathy are key ingredients for a successful business. A concept reaffirmed by Carlo Bartorelli, president and sole director of Bartorelli 1882, at the event organised in collaboration with Assogemme, on Saturday 9th, the second day of Vicenzaoro September 2023, Italian Exhibition Group’s international trade fair, ongoing at Vicenza Expo Centre until Tuesday 12th . In a talk with Raffaele Ciardulli, coach, trainer & luxury consultant, Bartorelli, who has headquarters in Riccione and stores in Bologna, Forte dei Marmi, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Milano Marittima and Milan, and also manages some single-brand boutiques for companies like Bulgari and Hublot, said: «Technology and artificial intelligence are complementary and useful elements with which to optimise customers’ requests, but emotion and empathy are essential for understanding their desires.» Soft skills with family roots in Romagna that he puts into practice on a daily basis in the relationship with his company’s 45 employees: «The important thing is to make them feel involved and loyal to the project. In this sense, listening is central and useful and I always learn something from them.»
TRAINING, MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE TO BE PASSED ON: CENTRO PRODUTTIVITÀ VENETO AND ITS COSMO FASHION ACADEMY
Two case studies in the Veneto region show how to pass on manufacturing excellence to new generations: the partnership between Scuola d’Arte e Mestieri – CPV in Vicenza and ITS Cosmo in Verona. Numerous enrolments and a rosy situation in the goldsmith sector provide the setting for “The Vicenza goldsmith sector and the training challenge”, an event that, on the second day of Vicenzaoro September 2023, saw Roberto Peripoli, CPV director, and president Alessandro Testolin , awarding diplomas to the students, who were reminded that the very reason the Academy decided to incorporate arts applied to the jewellery industry in its teaching, was «to put a touch of art into business». While, for ITS Cosmo, since 2011, the Veneto Region’s mandate has been to be present in the territory, listen to the companies, sound out the training needs and translate them into a training offer, as General Manager Roberto Gigliotti underlined. Piero Marangon, President of Sistema Oreficeria Gioielleria for Confartigianato Imprese Vicenza, was keen to emphasise that the companies took to the field with the desire to be part of the value chain, together with the territory. The ceremony was concluded by Elena Donazzan , Regional Councillor for Education, Training, Employment and Equal Opportunities: «The students here today will receive an advanced training diploma, valid on a European level, that has become part of the national system. In a few years’ time, I would like to see them here again as operators and entrepreneurs to tell us what you can do for such a constantly transforming sector as gold, silver and jewellery.»
